A novel so forcibly illustrating the difficulties which have to be surmounted by educated women, who are suddenly forced to seek remunerative employment, will be received with great interest by a class which is increasing every day. In "Mr. Hogarth's Will," the trials encountered by the heroine are ably depicted; her vain applications to be received as a clerk in the bank, as reader for the press, or as a cashier in a dressmaker's establishment, after having proved her capacity for these posts; the miserable pittance offered for situations which could be procured are not drawn from the imagination, but too faithfully from the life. There is no one engaged in the work of finding employment for women in these necessitous days who could not fully corroborate this experience, by not one or two, but by hundreds of examples. The arguments used in answer to her assertion that women are supposed to be unworthy of trust because they have never had any responsibilities, arebut too familiar to those who are urging the claims of women to be received into departments of work for which they are adapted. During December, 1895, I received a letter from General Walter C. Newberry, of Chicago, who during the Civil War commanded the 24th New York Cavalry. In this the General wrote:
"My Dear Major Meyer:
"You will remember how urgent the boys were last summer for a history of the Regiment to be prepared. I resolved then to gratify them and am engaged on it now. I want you to aid me to the extent of giving me a detailed account of yourself—nativity, date of birth, former service, engagements that you were in that led up to your promotion, your service with us, your wounding and incidents accompanying it, your period of treatment in the Hospital, your civil record since, and be kind enough not to be at all modest in setting it all forth. I shall not use your language, neither shall I give you credit for the biography, and you may drop all modesty with me and give it to me in full. You may have kept something of a diary or there may be some old letters that you have written which will give me some record by dates of the Regiment's service. I want it all."
In 1896 I complied with this request to the extent of giving a brief [Pg iv]account of my service in the Army. Since then, members of my family and a few personal friends have asked me to incorporate in this account incidents that I recalled, some of which they had heard me relate, asserting that they would be of interest to my grandchildren.
The following story is my attempt to accede to these requests. I am naturally proud of having had the privilege of serving under the Generals I have mentioned, and the story recited in the following pages is in accordance with my recollection of events that occurred over forty-five years ago.

Taylor Daniels. Average name, average face, average girl. What about her life? Well, that's a bit complicated. Finding out her werewolf heritage was not part of the seemingly normal life Taylor lived. She'd always been the strong but silent type, concentrating on getting good grades and pleasing her mother. But all that changes when she's merely picked up and dropped into the world of werewolves. She'll have to dust herself off and learn to live with the fact that her life was a lie. What's even more deranged is that her life is at risk. And who can possibly help her? Her so called "mate" Leo Knight. A forced marriage between the two is the only thing keeping her safe, but what happens when this little compromise turns into a whirlwind of attraction, hate, jealousy, and possible love? Can Taylor hold on to her only hope of sanity, or be whisked away in the world of werewolves, where her family, herself included, are a bunch of overgrown dogs? Taylor may seem shy on the outside, but dealing with a sarcastic, rude, arrogant mate has her standing up for herself and ultimately, facing her crazy consequences. Despite her situation, the confusing part is the possible attraction she has to Leo. And to think, it all started with two simple words..."I Do."
*The book is mostly pg-13 but its got mild language and scenes.

All the efforts of several hundred thousand people, crowded in a small space, to disfigure the land on which they lived; all the stone they covered it with to keep it barren; how so diligently every sprouting blade of grass was removed; all the smoke of coal and naphtha; all the cutting down of trees and driving off of cattle could not shut out the spring, even from the city. The sun was shedding its light; the grass, revivified, was blooming forth, where it was left uncut, not only on the greenswards of the boulevard, but between the flag-stones, and the birches, poplars and wild-berry trees were unfolding their viscous leaves; the limes were unfolding their buds; the daws, sparrows and pigeons were joyfully making their customary nests, and the flies were buzzing on the sun-warmed walls. Plants, birds, insects and children were equally joyful. Only men—grown-up men—continued cheating and tormenting themselves and each other. People saw nothing holy in this spring morning, in this beauty of God's world—a gift to all living creatures—inclining to peace, good-will and love, but worshiped their own inventions for imposing their will on each other.
The joy of spring felt by animals and men did not penetrate the office of the county jail, but the one thing of supreme importance there was a document received the previous evening, with title, number and seal, which ordered the bringing into court for trial, this 28th day of April, at nine o'clock in the morning, three prisoners—two [Pg 6]women and one man. One of the women, as the more dangerous criminal, was to be brought separately. So, in pursuance of that order, on the 28th day of April, at eight o'clock in the morning, the jail warden entered the dingy corridor of the woman's ward. Immediately behind him came a woman with weary countenance and disheveled gray hair, wearing a crown-laced jacket, and girdled with a blue-edged sash. She was the matron.
"You want Maslova?" she asked the warden, as they neared one of the cells opening into the corridor.
The warden, with a loud clanking of iron, unlocked and opened the door of the cell, releasing an even fouler odor than permeated the corridor, and shouted:
"Maslova to the court!" and again closing the door he waited for her appearance.
The fresh, vivifying air of the fields, carried to the city by the wind, filled even the court-yard of the jail. But in the corridor the oppressive air, laden with the smell of tar and putrescence, saddened and dejected the spirit of every new-comer. The same feeling was experienced by the jail matron, notwithstanding she was accustomed to bad air. On entering the corridor she suddenly felt a weariness coming over her that inclined her to slumber.
There was a bustling in the cell; women's voices and steps of bare feet were heard.
"Hurry up, Maslova! Come on, I say!" shouted the warden into the cell-door. [mehr]
