Upon The Subject Of Education, Not Presuming To Dictate Any Plan Or
System Respecting It, I Can Only Say That I View It As The Most
Important Subject Which We, As A People, Can Be Engaged In. That Every
Man May Receive At Least A Moderate Education, And Thereby Be Enabled To
Read The Histories Of His Own And Other Countries, By Which He May Duly

For My Part, I Desire To See The Time When Education--And By Its Means
Morality, Sobriety, Enterprise, And Industry--Shall Become Much More
General Than At Present; And Should Be Gratified To Have It In My Power
To Contribute Something To The Advancement Of Any Measure Which Might
Have A Tendency To Accelerate That Happy Period.
With Regard To Existing Laws, Some Alterations Are Thought To Be
Necessary. Many Respectable Men Have Suggested That Our Estray Laws--The
Law Respecting The Issuing Of Executions, The Road Law, And Some
Others--Are Deficient In Their Present Form, And Require Alterations.
But Considering The Great Probability That The Framers Of Those Laws
Were Wiser Than Myself, I Should Prefer Not Meddling With Them, Unless
They Were First Attacked By Others, In Which Case I Should Feel It Both
A Privilege And A Duty To Take That Stand Which, In My View, Might Tend
To The Advancement Of Justice.
But, Fellow-Citizens, I Shall Conclude. Considering The Great Degree Of
Modesty Which Should Always Attend Youth, It Is Probable I Have Already
Been More Presuming Than Becomes Me. However, Upon The Subjects Of Which
I Have Treated, I Have Spoken As I Have Thought. I May Be Wrong In

"Das Bildnis des Dorian Gray" (Originaltitel: "The Picture of Dorian Gray") ist der einzige Roman des irischen Schriftstellers Oscar Wilde. Eine erste Fassung erschien 1890 in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine aus Philadelphia, 1891 wurde bei dem Londoner Verlag Ward, Lock and Co. die heute bekannte, überarbeitete und erweiterte Fassung in Buchform veröffentlicht. Der seinerzeit als anrüchig geltende Roman war auch Gegenstand des Unzuchtprozesses gegen Wilde. Die Hauptfigur, der reiche und schöne Dorian Gray, besitzt ein Porträt, das statt seiner altert und in das sich die Spuren seiner Sünden einschreiben. Während Gray immer maßloser und grausamer wird, bleibt sein Äußeres dennoch jung und makellos schön. Der Roman gilt als Oscar Wildes Prosahauptwerk. Themen sind die Moralität von Sinnlichkeit und Hedonismus im Viktorianismus und die Dekadenz der englischen Oberschicht. Außerdem lassen sich die Handlung und die eingearbeiteten Kunstbemerkungen sowohl als Proklamation wie auch als Kritik des Ästhetizismus lesen, einer literarischen Strömung des Fin de siècle.

As submitted by Wilde to the magazine, the editors feared the story was indecent, and deleted five hundred words before publication — without Wilde's knowledge. Despite that censorship, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" offended the moral sensibilities of British book reviewers, some of whom said that Oscar Wilde merited prosecution for violating the laws guarding the public morality. In response, Wilde aggressively defended his novel and art in correspondence with the British press. Wilde revised and expanded the magazine edition of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1890) for publication as a novel; the book edition (1891) featured an aphoristic preface — an apologia about the art of the novel and the reader. The content, style, and presentation of the preface made it famous in its own literary right, as social and cultural criticism. In April 1891, the editorial house Ward, Lock and Company published the revised version of "The Picture of Dorian Gray". The only novel written by Wilde, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" exists in two versions, the 1890 magazine edition and the 1891 book edition, the story he submitted for serial publication in "Lippincott's Monthly Magazine". As literature of the 19th century, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is an example of Gothic fiction with strong themes interpreted from the legendary "Faust". [mehr]

Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, narrating a tale of "buccaneers and buried gold". Traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, Treasure Island is a tale noted for its atmosphere, characters and action, and also as a wry commentary on the ambiguity of morality — as seen in Long John Silver — unusual for children's literature. It is one of the most frequently dramatized of all novels. The influence of Treasure Island on popular perceptions of pirates is enormous, including such elements as treasure maps marked with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen bearing parrots on their shoulders.
Bones becomes a long-term lodger at the inn, only paying for about the first week of his stay. Jim quickly realizes that Bones is in hiding, and that he particularly dreads meeting an unidentified seafaring man with one leg. Some months later, Bones is visited by a mysterious sailor named Black Dog. Their meeting turns violent, Black Dog flees and Bones suffers a stroke. While Jim cares for him, Bones confesses that he was once the mate of a notorious late pirate, Captain Flint, and that his old crewmates want Bones' sea chest. Some time later, another of Bones' crew mates, a blind man named Pew, appears at the inn and forces Jim to lead him to Bones. Pew gives Bones a paper. After Pew leaves, Bones opens the paper to discover it is marked with the Black Spot, a pirate summons, with the warning that he has until ten o'clock to meet their demands. Bones drops dead of apoplexy (in this context, a stroke) on the spot. Jim and his mother open Bones' sea chest to collect the amount due to them for Bones' room and board, but before they can count out the money that they are owed, they hear pirates approaching the inn and are forced to flee and hide, Jim taking with him a mysterious oilskin packet from the chest. The pirates, led by Pew, find the sea chest and the money, but are frustrated that there is no sign of "Flint's fist". [mehr]

Thus Spake Zarathustra) is a philosophical novel by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. The book chronicles the fictitious travels and speeches of Zarathustra. Zarathustra's namesake was the Persian founder of Zoroastrianism, usually known in English as Zoroaster. Nietzsche is clearly portraying a "new" or "different" Zarathustra, one who turns traditional morality on its head. He goes on to characterize "what the name of Zarathustra means in my mouth, the mouth of the first immoralist:"
The book embodies a number of innovative poetical and rhetorical methods of expression. It serves as a parallel and supplement to the various philosophical ideas present in Nietzsche's body of work. He has, however, said that "among my writings my Zarathustra stands to my mind by itself." Emphasizing its centrality and its status as his magnum opus.
Since many of the book's ideas are also present in his other works, Zarathustra is seen to have served as a precursor to his later philosophical thought. With the book, Nietzsche embraced a distinct aesthetic assiduity. He later reformulated many of his ideas, in Beyond Good and Evil and various other writings that he composed thereafter. He continued to emphasize his philosophical concerns; generally, his intention was to show an alternative to repressive moral codes and to avert "nihilism" in all of its varied forms.
While Nietzsche injects myriad ideas into the book, a few recurring themes stand out. The overman (Übermensch), a self-mastered individual who has achieved his full power, is an almost omnipresent idea in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Man as a race is merely a bridge between animals and the overman. Nietzsche also makes a point that the overman is not an end result for a person, but more the journey toward self-mastery.
The eternal recurrence, found elsewhere in Nietzsche's writing, is also mentioned. "Eternal recurrence" is the possibility that all events in one's life will happen again and again, infinitely. The embrace of all of life's horrors and pleasures alike shows a deference and acceptance of fate, or Amor Fati. The love and acceptance of one's path in life is a defining characteristic of the overman. Faced with the knowledge that he would repeat every action that he has taken, an overman would be elated as he has no regrets and loves life. Opting to change any decision or event in one's life would indicate the presence of resentment or fear; contradistinctly the overman is characterized by courage and a Dionysian spirit.
The will to power is the fundamental component of human nature. Everything we do is an expression of the will to power. The will to power is a psychological analysis of all human action and is accentuated by self-overcoming and self-enhancement. Contrasted with living for procreation, pleasure, or happiness, the will to power is the summary of all man's struggle against his surrounding environment as well as his reason for living in it.
