A fictional story can sometimes become reality, that’s the great thing about history.
The year is 2009 and America is mired in a terrible recession. Looking for a way out of an increasingly worsening economy, an unethical think-tank called the Studebaker Institute of Washington, D.C. is advising the newly-elected President of the United States about the urgent need for the country to return to a gold standard as the only way out. However, the stumbling block is where to find all the gold required to do so and estimated by Studebaker to be 900,000 metric tons. In the history of mankind only 130,000 metric tons of gold have ever been mined on Earth.
After various meetings with the U.S. Geological Survey, Dr. R. Cinza Brown the chief economist of the Institute is convinced by the Survey’s eccentric Dr. Benjamin “Pig” Lemkau that despite certain obstacles, the quickest solution is to harvest vast amounts of gold on Mars, heretofore a well kept state secret, using high-yield thermonuclear ordnance. But Archie Jefferson, a photocopier repairman at Studebaker, has accidentally discovered this government top secret project called Operation GERDA - Gold Extraction & Relocation for Defense of America - and involved his army buddy and fellow Vietnam War veteran Sam Noble through a careless act.
Samuel Lee Noble is a Senior Courier with the U.S. State Department soon approaching mandatory retirement age and has always wanted to write a book, based on his many worldwide travels, but has picked the wrong time and place. He sends over to Archie at Studebaker using inter-agency mail some of his first chapters, which are then intercepted by Studebaker’s security staff, setting off a chain of events which threatens the lives of Sam, Archie, and others in their wider circle.
Now the FBI is secretly investigating the whole affair because Sam, after a lifetime of procrastination, is finally writing about his favorite subjects like Atlantis, the Holy Grail hoax, Knights Templar, mysteries of the ancient world, the Antarctic, and by strange coincidence has also picked gold to write about. The protagonist in Sam’s book is called Duke Mitchum, a name he simply invented by combining the names of this two all-time favorite actors, John “Duke” Wayne and Robert Mitchum. Sam loves old movies and television shows, especially Westerns.
Sam and Archie are suspected by Studebaker and the FBI of being dangerous spies and possibly belonging to a domestic terrorist cell with Duke being the clandestine ringleader of the cell. Sam, though, has the last laugh at the end when he retires with his mystical Brazilian wife, part Nambikuára Indian from the Amazon rainforest, to her native village called Campo Dourado where they both make an amazing discovery of their own not far from where Theodore Roosevelt once explored the legendary River of Doubt in 1914. “Why is Switzerland in my kitchen?”
A tabletop, role-playing game called MystikQuest is a fun diversion from the disappointing lives of Wes Walker and his socially awkward, junior high friends, Marc and AJ. It doesn’t matter to Wes that his friends think his game is a lame rip-off of “Lord of the Rings.” Playing fantasy fiction is harmless fun until one fateful day when Wes discovers a dying creature in his treehouse, clutching an old arrowhead relic Wes dug up from his back yard. The creature looks remarkably like a goblin. Fiction soon becomes reality.
What Wes thought was an old arrowhead turns out to be an ancient magic artifact that defends itself by spinning elaborate, seemingly realistic illusions. One moment, they’re all in AJ’s basement, entertaining other reluctant teens banished from the adult party upstairs, the next moment, a sunny, Swiss mountainscape appears where AJ’s kitchen should be. It’s only an illusion, but it looks, sounds, smells, and feels real.
The level of inexplicability rises when Wes’s mysterious, long-lost Uncle Dru suddenly shows up claiming to be a real-life wizard assigned to protect the stone from a rogue member of his order. On cue, a black-clad wizard with red eyes bursts in, initiating a wand duel that trap the six bewildered teens in the crossfire. Stray wand blasts trigger the stone’s defense mechanism and the kids are magically transported into the fictional world of Wes’s MystikQuest game.
Chosen for them by the stone, the kids are thrust into ironic game avatars: Meek and scrawny Marc is a charismatic, muscular warrior; quiet, autistic Schroeder is a transcendent druid; brainy, logical Wes is a mystical wizard; tall, stylish high-schooler Tyler is a diminutive hobbit; introverted emo Katie is a scantily-clad, voluptuous elf warrioress; and foul-mouthed, obnoxious AJ is the equally foul-mouthed and obnoxious half-ogre. Adjusting to their new superhuman bodies and abilities, they must navigate the game to somehow conclude its story for the stone to release them. But how can a bunch of nerdy, awkward teens who rarely exercise or go outside, much less know how to fight maniacal orcs and fire-spewing dragons, be expected to defeat an entire evil kingdom as daunting as (and ripped off from) Tolkein’s Mordor? And how can they stop the red-eyed wizard from sabotaging the game and hunting them like prey?
With help from two of the game characters, a kindly, garrulous old wizard and an Aragorn-like heir in exile, the kids will battle giant spiders, drunken brutes, moronic orcs, plagiarized plots, and their own insecurities to somehow beat the game before they’re stuck in the stone’s illusion forever.

Eileen McHugh - a life remade - is a novel about a sculptor whose creative life ended in the 1970s. She left no work, but now an archive of her notes and sketches has come into the possession of Mary Reynolds, who is determined to resurrect the artist's life and reconstruct her work. She contacts people who knew Eileen as a child and as a student in London. She follows the artist on a hippie trip to Thailand. Via these partial memories, she recreates the artist and her work.
Let us imagine an artist who struggled to complete anything, left near-unintelligible notes and was probably incompetent in the use of materials. This was an artist who found any focus hard to maintain, who seemed to dabble in multiple forms and spread apparently undisciplined attention so thinly across a multitude of whim-driven activities that hardly any project came to fruition. Picture a corpus of surviving works that only just creeps into double figures, some of which are dubiously attributed, while others may have been reworked by other hands. And imagine a signature work so incompetently produced it is literally disintegrating whilst, in that same room on a facing wall, there exists another work, largely unknown, by a different artist, who has remained almost anonymous, despite producing something that is arguably as beautiful and technically superior to its neighbour. If asked to assess, how might contemporary viewers, coming to this body of work for the first time, judge its worth or its creator’s achievement?
And how might we judge another artist who has left just one work, which exists only in reproduction as a contemporary photograph, taken in the few moments the work existed? But this artist, we now discover, left a variety of notes, descriptions and indications of materials to be used that are sufficient to reconstruct lost works. Is it not our duty to remake this life’s work, to recreate this legacy that might enrich lives, change perceptions and reinterpret experience? This artist is called Eileen McHugh. The previous, unfocused incompetent was called Leonardo da Vinci.
But where might I begin to remake the life and work of an artist like Eileen? We have no works, no studies or even failed projects awaiting reassembly. We know little of her undocumented life, whose destination remained unknown even to her own mother. But we all leave our own marks on time. Identifying them is the challenge, and then describing them becomes possible. Once reassembled, we might then remake Eileen McHugh’s life and reconstruct her works to enrich our collective experience. But where to start?

The novel subtly reveals the smoldering volcanoes that each soldier carries within himself in the unforgiving icy surroundings. The latent desires, dreams, restlessness and helplessness of the characters find an adroit expression in this novel.More than 25 blustery, shivering years, the Indian and Pakistani armies have been fighting a "No-Win" battle on the 20,000-foot-high Siachen Glacier, the world's highest war-ground. On average, one Pakistani soldier is killed every fourth day, while one Indian soldier is killed every other day. Over 1,300 Pakistani soldiers have died on Siachen between 1984 and 1999. According to Indian estimates, this operation had cost India over Rs. 50 billion and almost 2,000 personnel casualties till 1997. Almost all of the casualties on both sides have been due to extreme weather conditions. In spite of this,The word `Siachen` ironically means the place of wild roses. Arduous to live in, the Siachen area is beautiful to look at from the cockpit. Some of the world's tallest mountains fill the landscape, their snowy tops giving way to rivulets of white that glitter against the black and purple rock. It is a moonscape of mesmerizing pinnacles and ridges and drops. Ice formations rise a mile high. Clouds seem at arm's reach. During storms, the heavy snowfall seems as thick as long, white drapery. Prior to 1984 neither India nor Pakistan had any permanent presence in the area. Today, Siachen is more important as a test of diplomacy than of high-altitude battle skills. Over the years, Siachen itself has been the subject of seven major rounds of talks under various Governments ruled by various parties, negotiators have agreed that the conflict is futile -- and some have even called it lunatic. But one side or the other has always been too afr. Presently India holds two-thirds of the glacier and controls a few of the top-most heights aid of a double-cross to complete a deal.But what is the guarantee that in future Pakistani general/president will not re-occupy Siachen with ‘freedom fighters’? And in future Indian government will not ask the armed forces to take back the Soltoro ridge? USA and few western weapon manufacturing countries are only interested in selling more and more Fighter Aircrafts, Canons, other weapons and war machines to both the country. Hence, for their business shake the show must go on. If indeed we wanted to hold on to the heights, then why are we talking with each other for the last two decades to demilitarise the area? What of the four thousand soldiers who have been disabled? The cost is not only what is paid out to them in terms of disability pensions. . "The Whisperer in Darkness" is a story by H. P. Lovecraft. The story is told by Albert N. Wilmarth, an instructor of literature at Miskatonic University in Arkham. When local newspapers report strange things seen floating in rivers during a historic Vermont flood, Wilmarth becomes embroiled in a controversy about the reality and significance of the sightings, though he sides with the skeptics, blaming old legends about monsters living in uninhabited hills who abduct people who venture too close to their territory.
He receives a letter from one Henry Wentworth Akeley, a man who lives in an isolated farmhouse near Townshend, Vermont. He affirms that he has proof that will convince Wilmarth that he must stop focusing on the race's existence. The two exchange letters, including a record of the extraterrestrial race chanting with human agents, who worship several beings, including Cthulhu and Nyarlathotep, the latter of whom "shall put on the semblance of men, the waxen mask and the robe that hides".
The agents intercept Akeley's messages and harass his farmhouse nightly. Akeley and the agents exchange gunfire and many of Akeley's guard dogs are killed. Although Akeley expresses more in his letters, he abruptly has a change of heart. He writes that he has met with the extraterrestrial beings and has learned that they are peaceful. Furthermore, they have taught him of marvels beyond all imagination. He urges Wilmarth to pay him a visit and to bring along the letters and photographic evidence that he had sent him. Wilmarth reluctantly consents.
Wilmarth arrives to find Akeley in a pitiful physical condition, immobilized in a chair in darkness. Akeley tells Wilmarth about the extraterrestrial race and the wonders they have revealed to him. He also says that the beings can surgically extract a human brain and place it into a canister wherein it can live indefinitely and withstand the rigors of outer space travel and shows proof to Wilmarth. Akeley says he has agreed to undertake such a journey and points to a cylinder bearing his name. During this conversation, Wilmarth feels a vague sense of unease, especially from Akeley's odd manner of buzzing whispering.
During the night, a sleepless Wilmarth overhears a disturbing conversation with several voices, and a departing. When he investigates, he makes a horrifying discovery and escapes the farmhouse by stealing Akeley's car. When the authorities investigate the next day, they find nothing but a bullet-riddled house. Akeley has disappeared, along with all the physical evidence of the extraterrestrial presence. Wilmarth reveals the discovery that drove him out was a disembodied face and hands. We are led to conclude that it was not Akeley who had sat in the chair and conversed with him but one of the Mi-Go in disguise, as Akeley's brain was in the named cylinder. [mehr]

But the brothers can barely stay on top of the spirited horse they fled on!Their only hope lies in the quarrelsome gypsy, Heather. Half Spanish and severely traumatised by the abuse she suffered at the hands of her stepparents, her single wish is to find her mother who, according to her, was abducted by fairies when Heather was 6 years old. Skilled as an archer, she saves the naïve boys from various predicaments but her superstitious nature soon drives them crazy. Manuela and Louie are Twin Flames who came here, along with others, to enable that change. The tree of the good and evil writer used to describe the pattern between good and evil, as well as the fact that evil has no place in the new world, just love.
Manuela and Louie - The Riddle about Good and Bad is a story about a fresh view of the world, the evolution of the human world, as well as true love that is possible in that new world. Well, although we do not yet recognize all these changes, special souls, Twin Flames exist, and they came to this world to reveal to humans new and quality ways in which love can be realized. Such a pair of souls are both Manuela and Louie, who love each other with divine love, even though they live their lives separated from each other. The old thought about the tree of good and evil, about the relationship between good and evil and how the happiness of new-age humans and true love is possible only without evil and negative, the writer elaborates throughout this novel. The love of Manuela and Louis is the same as in Paradise on Earth. Even though Manuela goes through great sufferings, illusions and doubts whom she should love, her Louie or Ognyen, who may be closer to her in character, but wrong for her, she eventually finds a way out and decides that she can only love her true love and live with a sincere heart. Angels, Archangels and God lead her on that path, as well as her soul Ena and her Guardian Angel, Brilliant, Billy. This novel awakens the imagination and gives a new picture of the world, a picture of our future when love will be the most important motive of the human and when goodwill rule in the human world. When will our world become as harmonious and happy as in Paradise on Earth? This novel answers some of these questions.
I am a writer and psychologist from Belgrade, Serbia. I was born here back in 1977. Writing is my passion! I have been writing all my life but got serious about it ten years ago. When I was at the age of seven, I knew I wanted to be a writer. Unfortunately, I was noticed that BookRix doesn`t publish books in other languages than English or German. so, it is gonna take me some time to translate my other books to English. I have written three novels and two short stories in Serbian, so far. Sadly, we live in a world where quality isn`t appreciated much, but I never lose hope that things will get better. I write about love, and that is to say true love, and from the female perspective about the search for that perfect guy. Search isn`t easy at all, but it does bring heaven to us down here. So, relax, read, and enjoy my ebook. So far, I have translated two of my books to English by myself, and I`m working on translating the rest. I`ll keep you up to date.
