Fearing a communist push to control all of Indochina the U.S. sent military advisors to help train the South Vietnamese army. This is the genesis of the Vietnam War. This novel is the epic story of that monumental struggle and Dave Rockwood’s ten year odyssey. He has a good job, or so he thought, a beautiful wife and an infant son. Everything is perfect or so it seems. Through his work, he meets and bonds with a major in the U.S. army who has recently returned from overseas. The major tells Dave of the exciting things that are going on in Vietnam. Dave is fascinated with the major’s stories. The major tells Dave of a civilian program that is recruiting interpreters for overseas duty and will train the applicants. The major can set up an interview if Dave is interested. Dave’s job had recently taken a turn for the worse and he jumps at the chance, certain that his wife, Janette, will support him in his new career. He is accepted into the program. Janette is livid when he tells her what he has done. Because of unforeseen circumstances, it is too late for Dave to reconsider his options and must at least stay with his new job on a temporary basis. Dave finds himself preparing to land in Saigon, his marriage in a shambles and has no idea of what he has gotten himself into. The odyssey begins. The Emerald Odyssey is the story of the Vietnam War and much more. It is a story of adventure, love, romance, intrigue, betrayal, hatred, redemption, surprises and humor. Saracinesca is a novel by F. Marion Crawford, first published as a serial in Blackwood's Magazine and then as a book in New York (Macmillan) and Edinburgh (Blackwood) in 1887. Set chiefly in Rome of twenty years earlier, the novel paints a rich picture of the period, detailing the spiritual and economic problems of the aristocracy at a time when its influence and status were under attack from the emerging forces of modernity. This romance tells the tale of Giovanni Saracinesca and his courting of Corona d'Astradente, complete with intrigue and sword fights (Crawford was an expert fencer). It can be categorized as a work of historical fiction in that it relates a time when the author was only a child, and also in the sense that the particulars of that time and place are carefully delineated. In a sense, Crawford had been researching for this book all his life: his parents had witnessed the brief 1848 revolution, and his cousin, in her memoirs of Crawford, insisted that "[t]here is little doubt that Crawford as a boy had heard first-hand descriptions of [the] exciting events" of the 1860s. Saracinesca proved to be both an immediate hit and Crawford's greatest critical success. It was also a commercial triumph: he negotiated separate contracts for the serial printing and the simultaneous American and British publication, as well as future royalties. He followed it with two brilliant sequels, Sant' Ilario and Don Orsino, the three of which are usually considered a trilogy. Subsequent sequels, such as Corleone, continue the saga of Saracinesca family, but with a diversion from the previous focus on the drama and status of family members into heavily plotted, incident-heavy melodrama. Characters from Saracinesca and its sequels also appear in A Lady of Rome (1906) and The White Sister (1909). [mehr]

As a result of such intrigues, the belief in magic, along with other spiritual diseases, is spread amongst the Muslims by disbelieving magicians and their followers- to the extent that one can hardly find a house in which there does not live at least one of their followers- These people believe the devil's call because they have listened to false scholars instead of God and have turned their back on the Qur'an as if they knew better. Now, however, it is time for the voice of truth to be heard by those people, whose forefathers were not warned and who therefore remain heedless.
