Eingebettet in dem zentralen Teil des nördlichen Paraguay-Beckens wird das Pantanal regelmäßig durch den Paraguay-Fluss und seine zahlreichen Nebenflüsse überflutet, bildet großflächige Feuchtflächen und eine atemberaubende, wilde Natur, die mittlerweile unter gesetzlichem Schutz steht und 2000 von UNESCO als Welterbe deklariert wurde.
