When the Evangelical Revival, after blessing England, was about to break into Scotland and end the dreary reign of Moderatism, there was raised up in Thomas Chalmers a mind of such capacity as completely to absorb the new movement into itself, and of such sympathy and influence as to diffuse it to every corner of his native land. William Benjamin Smith (1850–1934) was a professor of mathematics at Tulane University. In a series of books, beginning with Ecce Deus: The Pre-Christian Jesus, published in 1894, and ending with The Birth of the Gospel, published posthumously in 1954, Smith argued that the earliest Christian sources, particularly the Pauline epistles, stress Christ's divinity at the expense of any human personality, and that this would have been implausible, if there had been a human Jesus. It rather has absurd faces – at least our perception tells us that story, and we have no difficulties to follow. Although we struggle: life is absurd? Really? Is there not a divine plan? Isn´t absurdity a sign of the absense of the divine? A sign of the devil? A satanic agenda? This is the reason I put those texts together giving readers an easy access to material other thinkers share with us, for both, experience and perception of the absurd has moved humans at all times. The absurd is indeed an important topic in human´s life experience. There is no real answer on the “why” of absurdity, if we are honest we do not know much about it. But we can read what humans have written and thought. That means listening to the voices of our ancestors: they often suffered from absurdity in life too. And by sharing their experiences in books and written witnesses they hoped their children had a better insight and perception – and finally hope. So go and read and look how your inner feelings and perceptions are affected, how some will get clear and some will fade away. You must give yourself time to “digest” what you have read. If you watch Black Sabbath´s Song "God is dead?" you will see that Ozzy Osbourne must have known the “Zeitgeist” documentary proving his deeper interest also in the case of God and Jesus. My case in this book is not Ozzy Osbourne (though I always loved to listen to him), nor the Zeitgeist movie (which is indeed an amazing film everybody should watch with discernment). If Ozzy Osbourne has time to look deeper when it comes to God and Jesus, we should also take our time to watch and dig and uncover hidden treasures, and there are many waiting for discovery. The case of Jesus is one of them. Here is the reason I publish this book being a collection of many different views and approaches encountering Jesus of Nazareth, and it schould be a good cross section of all those countless writings about the man from Galilee.
