When The Day Dawned The day was yet to dawn. From the warmth of my cosy bed, as I stepped out of the house, the entire town slept; a gigantic cocoon, in its depth, the silkiness of existence, folded in the mystique of darkness, in the aura of a wasteland from ancient times, as if the roads, fields, houses and trees cast by a magic spell; time, to its core drunk with antiquity, environs perpetuating colour. In the timelessness of eternity, in the mute fog, people in their bed-chambers crouched in sleep, the radiant moonlight in the sky paled. A deathly silence, flames in clay-lamps dwindling to their end. A probable rain ahead. Right above the street, chunks of clouds coursed the sky. Shivering in the wintry wind adjusting the folds of the dark shawl around my body, wiping away from the canopy of tearful eyes, images of children serenely asleep, mumbling to myself, I reached the riverside, got into the boat. The day was yet to dawn. Yearning for the other shore, my boat moved with the rushing waves. The morning star winked. The boat, water, the sail, the oars, the darkness and my drowsy self, all elements converged into one: a long lost memory flowered in the heart. Then the day dawned. The sun took over at noon, shadows crawled in the descending light, evening fell, then darkness cloaked all. A journey of several hundred nights at last touched the shore. Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward (1844–1911) was an early feminist American author and intellectual who challenged traditional Christian beliefs of the afterlife, challenged women's traditional roles in marriage and family, and advocated clothing reform for women. In 1868, three years after the Civil War ended, she published The Gates Ajar, which depicted the afterlife as a place replete with the comforts of domestic life and where families would be reunited—along with family pets—through eternity. In her 40s, Phelps broke convention again when she married a man 17 years her junior. Later in life she urged women to burn their corsets. Her later writing focused on feminine ideals and women's financial dependence on men in marriage. She was the first woman to present a lecture series at Boston University. During her lifetime she was the author of 57 volumes of fiction, poetry and essays. In all of these works she challenged the prevailing view that woman's place and fulfilment resided in the home. Instead Phelps' work depicted women as succeeding in nontraditional careers as physicians, ministers, and artists. [mehr]

I received a package in the mail recently, wrapped in a battered and soot-blackened wrapping. Intrigued, yet somewhat wary of the contents that might lie within, I poured myself a cup of strong coffee, retired to my comfortable chair in the living room of my modest home in front of a cheerful fire, and then opened it tentatively. There was no note; no explanation concerning the "gift"--who might have sent it, or by what post it was initiated. A thin book, in worse condition than the package wrapping. Scarred by fire, bent at the edges, altogether distressing. No title. No author name. I carefully flipped the cover, curious but unafraid by then. I had opened...a diary. An account written by the hand of a man named Terence, as I was to discover. The first words captivated me. "He's watching me. He beats me when I cross his path." The rough script nearly illegible at first. And so, I read on. This was NOT Dante, but it was fascinating. See for yourself.
