The Musketeers: Complete D'Artagnan Series by Alexandre Dumas. lexandre Dumas (1802–1870) was a French writer. The complete adventures of d'Artagnan are told in the D'Artagnan Series that includes The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, The Vicomte of Bragelonne, Ten Years Later, Louise de la Valliere and The Man in the Iron Mask. Those novels by Dumas are together known as the d'Artagnan Romances. Set in the 17th century, it recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to travel to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos and Aramis, inseparable friends who live by the motto "all for one, one for all", a motto which is first put forth by d'Artagnan. Dumas based the life and character of d'Artagnan on the 17th-century captain of musketeers Charles de Batz-Castelmore from his humble beginnings in Gascony to his death as a marshal of France in the Siege of Maastricht in 1673. Le jeune D’Artagnan profite de la situation pour demander d’être sous les ordres de M. de Tréville mais il lui annonce qu'on lui a dérobé sa lettre de recommandation. En effet, montant un cheval jaune ou bouton d'or, il a provoqué le comte de Rochefort en duel à Meung, qui a préféré lui donner le bâton par ses valets. Pressé, le comte s’entretenait avec Milady de Winter. Sortant de son entrevue avec M. de Tréville, D’Artagnan bouscule et se chamaille avec chacun des trois mousquetaires, ce qui lui vaut un duel avec chacun d'eux au Luxembourg. Sur le lieu de leur affrontement, les quatre hommes sont surpris par les gardes du cardinal et pactisent alors pour les combattre sous le cri de « Tous pour un, un pour tous ». Les gardes sont accompagnés de Lord de Winter, le beau-frère de Milady, qui combat à leur coté contre D’Artagnan. Mais finalement, les deux hommes fraternisent et le Lord invite le gascon chez sa sœur qui tombe sous son charme. The Three Musketeers is a novel by Alexandre Dumas. In 1625 France, d'Artagnan—a poor young nobleman—leaves his family in Gascony and travels to Paris with the intention of joining the Musketeers of the Guard. However, en route, at an inn in Meung-sur-Loire, an older man derides d'Artagnan's horse and, feeling insulted, d'Artagnan demands to fight a duel with him. The older man's companions beat d'Artagnan unconscious with a pot and a metal tong that breaks his sword. His letter of introduction to Monsieur de Tréville, the commander of the Musketeers, is stolen. D'Artagnan resolves to avenge himself upon the man, who is later revealed to be the Comte de Rochefort, an agent of Cardinal Richelieu, who is in Meung to pass orders from the Cardinal to Milady de Winter, another of his agents.
