PLAIN SQUARES: Make 24 Brown and 15 White. Ch 20 sts. Row 1: 1 s c in 2nd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 s c in next ch, repeat from * across ch, ch 2, turn. Row 2: 1 s c in first ch 1 space, * ch 1, 1 s c in next ch 1 space, repeat from * across row, ending ch 1, 1 s c in turning ch, ch 2, turn. Repeat Row 2 sixteen times more.
STRIPED SQUARES: Make 38. Work in same manner as plain squares, using colors as follows: 6 rows Beige, 6 rows Scarlet, 6 rows Beige.
FINISHING: Using Brown, work 1 row s c around each square, working 3 s c in each corner. Block each square to measure 6 ½ inches. Following chart for placement of squares and using Brown, s c squares tog. Using Brown, work 1 row s c around entire afghan, working 3 s c in each corner.

FIRST MOTIF (Make 68) . . . Starting at center with White, ch 6. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 15 dc in ring. Join to top of ch-3. Break off. 2nd rnd: Attach Scarlet to same place as sl st, 3 sc in same place, * sc in next 3 dc, 3 sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. 3rd rnd: Attach White to first sc, sc in same place, * at base of 3-sc group make dc, ch 2 and dc (2 long dc made); sc in 3rd sc of same sc group, (make a long dc over next sc, sc in next sc) twice. Repeat from * around. Join and break off. 4th rnd: Attach Navy to corner sp, in same sp make sc, ch 2 and sc; sc in each sc and in each dc around, making sc, ch 2 and sc in each corner sp. Join and break off. 5th rnd: Attach White to corner sp, sc in same sp, make long dc in same sp; * (sc in next sc, long dc over next sc) 3 times; sc in next sc, in corner sp make long dc, 2 sc and long dc. SECOND MOTIF (Make 67) . . . Work as for First Motif, reversing Scarlet and Navy rnds.
To Join Blocks: Starting and ending with a Scarlet Block, sew 5 Scarlet and 4 Navy Blocks together to form first strip. Starting and ending with a Navy Block, sew 5 Navy and 4 Scarlet Blocks together to form second strip. Sew re¬maining blocks together in alternate pattern as before. Sew strips together.
BORDER . . . 1st rnd: Attach Navy to any corner sp, make a puff st, ch 2 and puff st in same sp, make a puff st in each sp around, making puff st, ch 2 and puff st in each corner sp. Join. 2nd rnd: Sl st in corner sp and work as for first rnd. Join and break off. Block to measurements.
MATERIAL-2 boxes of dark and 1 box of light Woolco Germantown Zephyr.
No. 8 Woolco hook, 10 inches long.
With light yarn chain 36, work even in afghan stitch until strip is 2 ½ yards long.
With dark yarn chain 36.
1ST AND 2D ROWS-Single crochet.
3D ROW-*3 single crochet, make a puff stitch thus; wrap, put hook around the 4th stitch in 1st row, pull yarn through, wrap, take off 2 loops, wrap, put hook around the same stitch, pull yarn through, wrap, take off 2 loops, wrap, take off 3 loops. * Repeat between stars, end row with 3 single crochet.
Repeat 2d and 3d rows until stripe is as long as light one.
Make 3 stripes of dark, 2 light. Place wrong sides together, join with single crochet, using light yarn.
Embroider cross stitch design on light stripes. See chart.
BORDER-With dark *in 6th row make 3 double crochet each 1 ¼ inches long.
