This is somewhat a false choice. It is obvious that winning as many seats as
possible is the right strategy, so the Democrats shouldn’t be too choosy about
their candidates as long as they are the strongest Democrats in that district.
The problem comes when policy priorities are chosen by the governing majority.
Given the polarization within the country, it would behoove Democrats to
govern on some sort of economic policy consensus that works for the liberals
and the Conor Lambs in the party.
The social and cultural issues have largely been won by liberals already, so
they can be put on hold at the national level for a while. Democrats can push
many of their more liberal ideas at the state and local levels. The red line
will be to keep the federal government from undermining their local decisions.
The conflict will still occur when Conor Lamb wants tariffs and that hurts
other Democrat constituents more than it helps his. So where is the overlap
between Conor Lamb and the rest of the Democrats? That is not clear. Probably
not on universal healthcare, but maybe with a limited, catastrophic plan. A
better bet is infrastructure and support for economic redevelopment.
Democrats should push for lower federal taxes and spending, and target the tax
cuts at middle income wage earners rather than either the rich or those who
already pay none.
